Characters and costumes

Costume:
The prisoner is wearing a grey jumper, black jeans/leggings and white trainers. The full prisoner costume is not seen in the documentary as the shots including the prisoner are purely talking heads shots. I decided this because of my research into interview and crime style documentaries, they included mainly talking heads scenes of prisoners which I thought increased the tension and dramatic effect by the camera being close to the focus point (the prisoner) of the frame. In addition, this connects the audience with the storyline and prisoner more, as it expresses the prisoners raw emotions and thoughts through the shot.

Representation:
I chose to dress the character of the prisoner in a grey jumper because from researching into prisoner clothing, I found a lot of prisoners wear plain jumpers as the purpose of their clothing is to be dull and bland as they are stripped from their personality. I chose for the character to wear no makeup with their hair to be up, this appearance gives a realistic prisoner representation as its a completely natural, minimal and a slightly scruffy look.

Evaluation Q1

This clip from Piers Morgan: Killer Women presents its use of commentary narrative layered with tense music leading up to a dramatic moment. This highlights how the traditional use of sound in crime documentaries does slightly contrast as they lack a mixture of music and sound effects. I challenge traditional conventions of a crime documentary through my use of costume as I decided to use a light grey jumper for the prisoner costume. This differs from the usual costumes of a blue, white or orange jumpsuit commonly seen in popular documentaries e.g. Making Of A Murderer, Interview With A Serial Killer, Who Took Johnny.
