Film poster analysis

  • Anchorage- words that accompany the picture e.g. 'The past never dies it kills'
I think the anchorage is used as one of the main focus points of the poster because of the crisp white italics harshly contrasting against the faded black background. The colour tone and contrasting immediately catch the audiences eye. In addition, the short and snappy anchorage has a underlying dark message personifying the past which makes it interesting so, draws in the audience in.

  • Preferred reading- When audiences respond to the product the way media producers want/expect them to: I feel that the audience responds to the poster with a burst of adrenaline and terror due to the graphic and eye- catching image which is the producers aim. In addition, when I first saw the poster I felt on edge and shocked at how realistic the image is. I think the producers aim for the audience to feel extremely on edge to convey the full effect of demonic possession and all the other underlying symbolism. On the other hand, the producers expect a slight rush of exultation of a fresh new thriller film which is exciting but frightening at the same time.

Tone and register- How the poster addresses the audience.

Register- vocabulary, style and grammar used by speakers and writers according to a certain situation. There are degrees of formality when it comes to register.
An example of tone and register in this poster: 'The past never dies it kills'
I think this addresses the audience by how short and sharp the vocabulary is which makes it very effective as its a clever and snappy expression enticing the target audience. The tone of this anchorage is dark and mysterious

  • Intertextual references- When one text refers to another text: 'The Return' makes distinct links and references to the film 'Possession' also starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. This connection implies the main themes are possession, demons and evil forces which creates the style of the plot for the audience.

  • Ideology and values- ideas about the way the world is and ought to be: I believe it is how the past can affect something or someone's life greatly by death, evil, demonic possession, decay, corruption etc... the film focuses on how effective the past can be in a negative sense. Furthermore, the 'never' in the anchorage conveys how the past is eternal and everlasting so, the effect it causes whether its pain, joy, hope etc.. is endless.

  • Previous credits- used as a form of guarantee and as a means of prompting audience expectationthe use of presenting the name of Sarah Michelle Gellar on the poster because she is a talented and well known actress so, it will increase higher expectations from target audience.

  • The title: 'The Return' The 'R' in the title is backwards which could link to the idea of the past and the motion of going back in time to a corrupt time. The title is slightly blurred which may connote the ideology of how timeless the past is and how endless the destructibility of it is. Also, it could portray how fast the past goes by consistently moving forwards in time and how vulnerable and powerless humans are to change the past.

  • Film's star: Sarah Michelle Gellar- This will increase attraction and popularity of the film simply by the actresses name being used on the front of the poster.  Furthermore, she specializes in mainly the thriller genre which entices the target audience in. Gellar made her name in a Vampire series so this film is building on her reputation in that genre.

    BLUE: Example

Comments

  1. This is quite small and difficult to read as it is here. You haven't commented on the backwards R in the title or on the actress Sarah Michelle Gellar who made her name in a Vampire series so this film is building on her reputation in that genre. Do check your spelling and grammar please. You must make a good impression by layout and accuracy.

Amy Winehouse documentary: 5 shot analysis

This is a medium close up shot and a wide angle view capturing her substantial fan base on a worldwide level. The narrator is talking about how she tries to disappear from her life which could imply through her substance addiction and abuse which correlates with the shot as it shows her drinking. Amy looks slightly disoriented/dazed which matches the narration perfectly mediating her in a very negative light. In this shot, the lighting is very dark and dull which is unusual because when she is performing the lighting should be bright and vibrant. The mise en scene is the crowds of people in the background which highlights Amy's pure popularity through her talent. I feel as though Amy is the focus in this shot as the dark lighting makes her boldly stand out against the crowd. The shot slowly fades out as the background soundtrack of Amy quietens and fades which is very effective as it increases the intensity of audiences sympathy and sadness for her. This is a extreme close up...

Production update

Document what you have done and when as you film/edit supported with pictures/ screenshots/ snippets of footage. After filming the interview shots I have filmed the interview section shots at the weekend, I have 30 minutes worth of footage that I have edited down to 3 minutes. I am going to combine the extra shots I have edited out of my documentary into a blooper/extra film. I think the interview shots went well as we did them all within two days of filming. Also, the acting and dramatic effect I wanted to portray went as I wanted it to go. Before filming the locations shots: I am going to start filming the location shots this weekend, I have chosen to film at a old prison- looking place near me as Bedford prison still hasn't got back to me. In terms of what I am filming this weekend; I am going to film the whole building in a long shot, close ups, low angle and the surroundings e.g. the forestry area around it and the gates. If the permission...

Amy: Amy Winehouse documentary

Amy: Amy Winehouse It is a 2015 British compliation and musical/biography documentary film about the life and death of British singer- songwriter Amy Winehouse. The film covers Winehouse's life and her struggles with substance abuse, both before and after her career blossomed, and which eventually caused her death. A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy Winehouse was a musician that captured the world's attention. A pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense- she wrote and sung from the heart using her musical gifts to analyse her own problems. The combinations of her raw honesty and supreme talent resulted in some of the most unique and adored songs of the modern era. The documentary shows the songwriter's life from early childhood, to her music career, troubled relationships, self harm, bulimia, controversial media attention and downfall with her drug and alcohol addiction. I think this camera shot represents the happy, healthy and full of energy person Amy was, as s...
