Evaluation: Magazine Listing

Evaluation: medium? How is it original?

Background

For the background on the first page of my magazine listing I used a photo of graffiti on a wall because I feel as though it links in with the themes of crime, corruption, wrong, rights and restrictions in society. In addition, the colours of the background are neutral tones and not too bold therefore, doesn't affect the visibility of the text for the reader. I think the colours of the background go really well with the text because it is mostly light grey/white with areas of bright colours highlighting the black text. At the bottom of the listing, I created the title 'Secrets Of A Serial Killer' in vibrant red font, which is boldly standing out from the listing as well as not covering the text. I think this adds a creepy and menacing element to the listing linking to my theme.

Main image

I chose a picture of the prisoner I'm using in the documentary because I feel as though it captures the prisoners full sinister expression enticing the target audience. I edited the photo by decreasing the saturation and lighting creating a cold toned photo lit by chiaroscuro dark lighting. Also, I increased the contrast darkening the shadowed areas and brightening the harshly lit areas linking to the harsh artificial lighting of the prison.

I chose to locate the main picture of the prisoner in the left hand top corner because through my research I found popular newspaper listings located pictures in the top corners so, it is spaced out for the text and lines to separate the columns making it easier for the readers to read the listing. Furthermore, I feel as though by placing the image there it captures the reader's attention as well as not covering the entire listing with overcrowded pictures and little text. Through research, I found getting a balance between text and images as I didn't want lots of text as it makes the listing look uninteresting. On the other hand, I didn't want lots of images as it would look messy and unprofessional.

To enhance the impact and boldness of the photo, I created a checkered border around the sides of the photo, which worked effectively as it looks creative and unique from other newspaper listings. Also, it intensely contrasts from colours and patterns in the background.

Background: second page of my listing

For the background on the second page of my magazine listing, I used a cropped screenshot from my documentary of the 'prison' building as it creates a link to my documentary. Also, It works well as the colours are neutral matching with the first page of my listing but not affecting the text. Initially I used black writing but it blended with the background making it hard to read so, I changed it to light grey/white. I don't like the colour change of the text because it differs and negatively contrasts from the first page text.

'Today's Top Picks' column

I decided to use red for the 'Today's Top Picks' section as its a pivotal element and strikingly contrasts from the neutral tones of the other background, making the column boldly stand out to the reader. I chose a dark red as it links to the themes that my documentary portray of evil and danger.
I think the 'Today's Top Picks' section works really well as provides the readers with an opportunity to explore new and popular TV shows that they may be interested in. In addition, underneath each TV show I use a synopsis to add extra information for the readers who are interested and might need to a new or popular TV show.

Film poster analysis

Anchorage- words that accompany the picture e.g. 'The past never dies it kills' I think the anchorage is used as one of the main focus points of the poster because of the crisp white italics harshly contrasting against the faded black background. The colour tone and contrasting immediately catch the audiences eye. In addition, the short and snappy anchorage has a underlying dark message personifying the past which makes it interesting so, draws in the audience in. Preferred reading-   When audiences respond to the product the way media producers want/expect them to:   I feel that the audience responds to the poster with a burst of adrenaline and terror due to the graphic and eye- catching image which is the producers aim. In addition, when I first saw the poster I felt on edge and shocked at how realistic the image is. I think the producers aim for the audience to feel extremely on edge to convey the full effect of demonic possession and all the other underlyin...

Evaluation Q3

What have you learned from your audience feedback? Target audience The target audience I looked at would be from 16-50, non-specific to gender, ethnicity or social class; This is the demographic of my documentary because of how widely varied it is and how many topics it covers that would interest any age, gender, class or race. I think as my documentary is of crime genre many ages are interested in this, which is why the age range is so wide. I don't think a crime genre documentary would be suitable for someone younger than 16 or older than 50 as I believe it would either be too frightening, uninteresting or wouldn't be able to understand the factual element to it. I don't think my target audience would be the social group who have a disposable income to more likely pay in order to watch it as people can easily watch the documentary for free on catch-up. I think my target audience would have to be interested in psychology (minds of criminals) and the crime system ...

Amy: Amy Winehouse documentary

Amy: Amy Winehouse It is a 2015 British compliation and musical/biography documentary film about the life and death of British singer- songwriter Amy Winehouse. The film covers Winehouse's life and her struggles with substance abuse, both before and after her career blossomed, and which eventually caused her death. A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy Winehouse was a musician that captured the world's attention. A pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense- she wrote and sung from the heart using her musical gifts to analyse her own problems. The combinations of her raw honesty and supreme talent resulted in some of the most unique and adored songs of the modern era. The documentary shows the songwriter's life from early childhood, to her music career, troubled relationships, self harm, bulimia, controversial media attention and downfall with her drug and alcohol addiction. I think this camera shot represents the happy, healthy and full of energy person Amy was, as s...
